DEVRA FREELANDER (1990 - 2019)

“Every time we access a beloved memory is becomes slightly altered, taking on qualities we subconsciously associate from our peripheral experiences that have occurred since that original moment. Therein lies the tragic irony of memory: If the true intention is to retain the objective factual record of a certain event, then the best way to “remember” something would be to not think about it at all. The devastating loss of a portion of my Antarctic photographs revealed both an inadequacy and an unexpected kinship between the vulnerability of digital files and of memory. In both instances, I realize that the objective factuality and endurance of my memories are less valuable to me then the ability to freely and frequently engage with whatever version of them currently persists.”

— Devra Freelander, “Polar Desire” (2016)

Devra’s legacy is not only cast in resin, formed in steel, or poured in cement like so many of her exquisite sculptures. It is spread throughout the community that she pulled toward her like a magnet. It’s carried by those she inspired with her openness, enthusiasm, generosity, talent, and vision. We want to honor her by keeping her legacy alive - not carefully preserved in a glass jar but something to be ‘engaged with freely and frequently’ - in part by continuing the work of MATERIAL GIRLS. It won’t be easy. While we’ve always been non-hierarchical, in reality Devra was like a mix between our spokesperson, our mascot, and our charismatic leader.

Devra’s lasting gift to us will always be each other. She gave us to each other, and in turn we gave each other super powers. Devra had so many. She was our princess of power and of power tools. A sculptor extraordinaire, she inspired us to build impossible objects and to forge the world we wanted to inhabit. She was a bubbling fountain of endless positive energy and encouragement. Like her beloved Matt said, she was “the actual sun.” Her unwavering light made everything around her grow. We will continue to be inspired by her radiant spirit for the rest of our days. She will be immeasurably, irreplaceably missed.
